Sara: A Hero's Story

Three aircraft carriers, the only vessels that were capable of waging war against Japan, were cruising toward Honolulu at the time of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. One of those vessels, the U.S.S. Saratoga CV-3, played a pivotal role in determining an American victory over the vast Pacific Ocean. This is the story of one mighty ship and the men who sacrificed everything to keep her afloat. Though fiction, "Sara" chronicles the Pacific War through the memoirs of dozens of shipmates, including the author's father, Ralph G. Guy. It's a tale of heartache, commitment, hijinx and destruction as the Greatest Generation pummeled the Empire of Japan into submission. The "Lucky Lady" waged the battle from the sea and from the sky. She withstood a brutal attack off the shores of Iwo Jima that cost the lives of 142 shipmates, but she was till afloat when the war ended. This is a tribute to those who served above deck and below. May their sacrifice never be forgotten.
