Based on real events that occurred during the Dutch exploration of New Zealand in the seventeenth century, Stranger Love is told through the eyes of a Maori princess and the young cousin of Dutch explorer Abel Janszoon Tasman. Te Ao-mihia longs to escape from the confines of her role as village princess and Jakob's attempt to leave a dull clerk's job led to his being press-ganged onto a ship bound for the East Indies. There he joins Tasman's expedition to the Great Southland. The Dutch arrival in Maori waters leads to misunderstandings and bloodshed. Despite this the two young people meet and fall in love only to have that love lead to a bittersweet end.
