Lane Trahan lived in a small Arkansas town named Cove. All he wanted in the whole, wide world was a new pony that he could train and love. Lane's father, Chad, found such a pony at the Little Rock Auction Barn, and after some heavy haggling with the auctioneer, bought the little pony for his son. His instructions to his son were to train the pony for show at the Arkansas State Fair and Rodeo next year. Lane entered his task with enthusiasm and soon the smart pony, whom he had named "Pride," became his pride and joy. Pride learned all the commands: walk, trot, gallop, run, kneel, and even Piaffe (French for prance). Lane became justifiably proud of Pride and one bright morning decided to let his little brother, Tanner, go with him for a ride down to the lake. Everything was going fine, with both boys enjoying the beautiful morning and the smooth ride, when a villain arose from the weeds and grass down by the old twisted oak tree by the lake. The boys were in mortal danger, soon to be injured and dying, except for the bravery and strength of their friend and pony, Pride. When the boys needed him most, Pride struck at the evil with determination and speed, running the villain back to the grasses. But the youngest boy, Tanner, was injured and in great pain. Only Pride's strength and training could save him now. Would his training be enough to save the young boy? Could he understand what he would need to do to help? Lane could only hope that his lessons and training had been learned well...
