The ship's air renewal system will become inoperative before the return window opens and there is no chance that any rescue vessel can reach them in time to save their lives. But only the upland areas have been explored by the dozens of robot vehicles sent from our planet. So maybe some of the deeper canyons will reveal something unexpected.
