Everyone is asleep except for Ebby and Annie. The Birthday Sleepover is narrated by Annie, whose cousin and best friend Ebby invites six girls to a sleepover for her birthday. The celebrations begin with a boat ride, where one of God's gifts is displayed in all its colorful splendor, and a New York landmark inspires Ebby's shy friend Leah to share a family story. There are several more treats in store for the girls, including a special surprise upon their return to Ebby's home. Before settling down for the night, Aunt Rita tells the girls Ebby's favorite story "Kissed by the Sun," which is a tale of how Ebby got her rich brown skin and black curly hair. After the story, a conversation ensues in which the girls are made aware of how special they all are.Ultimately, at The Birthday Sleepover, the girls are bonded by a deeper appreciation for what makes them and each other unique.
