In the course of her work, Jess and Eli's friendship grows closer, and Eli remains her steadfast friend through the course of Maudie's illness. When trouble literally explodes at the quarry, seriously injuring Boris, Jess learns how deep her love for Boris truly is, and as she prays for his recovery, she is also thrust into the position of having to emotionally support Eli when Eli and Aaron are suddenly and unexpectedly united with their past.
