Many methods for generating ions for mass spectrometry require the analyte to be presented either directly under high vacuum or contained in a solution. Ambient ionization MS techniques direct a stream of ionizing or ion-desorbing fluid medium onto a sample surface from which analyte ions are withdrawn and transported through air into the mass analyzer via a standard API interface. A sample only needs to be exposed to the ionizing medium under ambient conditions. This book describes methods that enable the detection of surface materials like waxes, alkaloids, flavors, or pesticides by plainly exposing the corresponding items to the ionization region of the interface, without harm to samples.
