I was afraid, but that didn't make sense, because I am fearless. How could I be afraid? I don't run scared, I stand up to my fears, and I stare them in the eye, and I intimidate them into backing down. I wanted to tell the officer this, but how could I tell him I am unafraid when I was so clearly scared? How could I stare something in the eye and intimidate it if I didn't know what or who it was? I wanted to ask Sergeant Akers this, but I couldn't open my mouth. My jaw was locked shut as another violent wave of fear crashed down on me. How was I supposed to protect us from an unknown attacker? "Miss McGee?" he asked again. Finally, I opened my mouth and proceeded to vomit all over his shiny black shoes. I leaned over, retching, miserably detached as I inspected the remains of the pizza I had borrowed for dinner, shining white, red and semi-solid in the sweet white Pinot Grigio that had accompanied it. The mess glistened over his feet and pooled on the floor around his shoes. It smelled of bile and wine, and my stomach clutched again... Incongruously, all I could think is that I should have drunk red with pizza.
