Wally, a scenery photographer, stumbles across a dead woman in the woods off The Bruce Trail, near Ball's Falls. The woman is the victim of an honor killing committed by her own brother, Aamir. He escapes arrest by fleeing to Syria and becoming part of ISIS.Two detectives bring the parents to trial for being complicit, but are frustrated by not catching Aamir. Little do they know that he intends to come back to Canada with a false passport and a fake name to carry on his war. Wally binds the whole story together, as his feelings about extreme Islam and the history of his own religion, Christianity, are explored. He becomes cynical about all religions, even his own, and yet, finds some internal need for them. The novel evolves in the form of a diary and a blog, and includes actual news events. It mentions the Shafia honour killings in Kingston, Ontario, in June 2009. Later, on April 14-15th , 2014, TV and newspapers reported that 276 female students were kidnapped from high-schools in Nigeria by extreme Muslim militants. On the home front, more and more young Canadians seem to be radicalized. ISIL expands its territory in the Middle East and brags, first we take Mosul, and then Kobane. October 2014 is a difficult month when Kobane is under siege. In the meantime, Wally is still traumatized from his original discovery of Hazirah's body on October 11th 2011, so that he seeks professional counseling. He has nightmares, dreaming he is a Crusader, waging war against the Saracens in 1099. These uneasy nights are experienced by Wally almost 3 years after he discovered the body. Perhaps this revised edition brought out in 2019, several years after its first publication is somewhat "dated". However, if we do not learn from history, we are bound to repeat our mistakes. The larger issue of politics and the personal stresses that the characters go through are still relevant to us today, not only as fascinating narratives but also as stories with a moral lesson. After killing his sister in 2011 in an honor killing at Ball's Falls, and later killing an older lady, Ramona, who knows computers and who was getting better marks in class, Aamir escapes the country and finds his niche. He is thrilled to be part of ISIS. His commander tells him that the nightmare of 9/11 is not over for the West. Aamir, now known as Hafiz, is given a test to behead somebody on videotape. After this task, he is assigned a new mission. Go back to Toronto with a false passport in order to sabotage the subway system in Toronto. Abqurah recognizes that her brother is the one who did the beheading in the news broadcast despite the black niqab, "by the eyes". She visits her parents in prison and is disowned by them.
