This book is not about some high and mighty or fancy story of the Anglo-Indian community. It is a book about their sweat, tears, and blood or tears of blood. It is the story of daily despair and the faith and hope of a challenged community and how they coped with their plight with tenacity and humor. It is about the stories of my family. It is a story of how they enjoyed life in spite of life's twists and turns. It is a book that needs to be read in the evenings when you are sitting down with your 'sundowner' or 'chota peg, ' with your children and grandchildren around your knees and you are reading from this book and adding to it you own stories. How much of this will be from your own background will depend on you and your memories. At times you will laugh and call me crazy, and at times we will cry together as we recall all that our parents went through to make life just a bit better for the next generation. Then we will lift our chins as we sing 'those were the days.' We are always excited, and all our writing and storytelling may not always be in the right way and the right place. But our hearts were and are in the right place. That's the way we lived, and I guess that's the way we will spend our days. This book is a tribute to my small but gallant community and to those who feel that you may take them out of India, but you cannot take India out of them
