The Girl Who Wrangled Asteroids (The Girl With The Turtle Tattoo)

The Girl with the Turtle Tattoo is anxiously sitting inside an Orion capsule about to launch on the largest SLS rocket-stack ever assembled. She is part of a crew shepherding three hydrogen bombs up into orbit. She is a newly-minted NASA astronaut, on her first space mission, armed with a Ph.D. in astrophysics plus post-doc in asteroid composition and behavior. The crew intends to rendezvous with the returning Mars Transit Vehicle, Hermes, then sling-shot around the planet, gaining enough speed to in three months encounter a giant Asteroid. The recently discovered six-mile-long rock is plummeting down from above the planetary disc out of the Oort cloud surrounding the solar system. Unless it can be diverted or blown up, the Asteroid is on course to catastrophically slam into Earth. She is confident of appropriately deploying their nukes into the unknown Asteroid's composition, thus preventing an Extinction Event. Unfortunately, nothing is as it seems and everything goes wrong. Her continuing nightmares herald an impossible choice: abandoning her innate Homo sapien priorities for something else... something alien.
