Berlin 1932: a tinderbox of violence, anxiety and uncertainty on the eve of Hitler's ascension to power. It's the tipping point for the Herschels who escape to Paris. On the eve of their departure, Karl and Ben pledge to reunite in the French capital. Karl is forced to join the Nazi paramilitary storm troopers where he is in the same group as Reinhardt. When Karl saves Reinhardt from drowning, the pair forge a bond. When the Nazis murder Reinhardt's lover, it forges a determination for revenge.War comes and Karl - in the army now - experiences the horror of the conflict and but he deserts and is reunited with Ben in Paris. Reinhardt is also in Paris with revenge on his mind. He persuades Karl to help him but the consequences couldn't have been imagined by either of them. Just when they think the way is clear to fly to freedom, Günter confronts them and Karl has to make the most difficult choice of his life ...
