Queensland gardener Harry Green's five-year-old daughter Martha accuses him of murder, because he 'petticides' snails. His oldest client Cecily goes missing, and Harry becomes a suspect. When another client disappears, his wife Nancy reassures him that the police investigation is just procedure. But Harry must deal with noises at his own properties, a doll he digs up in Cecily's garden, missing tools, eccentric clients and the voluptuous new estate agent. Meanwhile, Martha insists on keeping a stray kitten that appears at their door and Nancy is obsessed with the doll. Cecily undertakes a pilgrimage into the past.
