Shades of Right is a heart wrenching story of two men moving through their lives until one day their lives are dramatically entwined during the War Between the States. Isaac is a slave, raised by a man who treats him like a favored son yet refuses to grant him his freedom, believing it to be in Isaac's best interests to remain his slave. When Isaac's almost a father owner dies Isaac is inherited by a new owner, a man who has no recognition of Isaac's humanity but a desire for Isaac's unique talents. Isaac's new owner believes slaves are property, merely livestock with a monetary value. When President Lincoln announces the Declaration of Emancipation for slaves in Rebel states, Isaac's owner decides to sell his slaves before the president can free all the slaves and he loses money, including Isaac's family. Hank Hansohn, the son of German immigrants to Minnesota Territory, grows up in the lush green lands neighboring the lands set aside as agency land for the Lakota Indians when they are pushed out of their native lands to make room for the onslaught of white settlers moving into the area. Hank's closest childhood friend is Walking Moon, a Lakota youth living on the reservation just west of New Ulm, until he harsh conditions the Lakota are forced to bear under the government's care drive them to rise up and start the other American Civil War. Based on a true event that took place in Missouri in 1862, Shades of Right is the story of what it takes to bring together a slave brave enough to approach a complete stranger for help when just asking risks his life and the man in the 9th Minnesota Regiment who responds to a slave's request for help with actions knowing that the result is to be court martialed.
