Investigators utilize many tools and resources to gather evidence for their cases and research. One such resource, which is the most valuable, is also the most complex-the human being. And, the tools investigators use for this resource consist of interview and interrogation skills. This book was designed, organized, and written to address this very unique, challenging, and indispensable source of information. This book is split into two parts. In fact, each "part" originally consisted of a standalone book, one on interview and interrogation and the other on eyewitness evidence. These two books were combined into one to provide a single reference-the only one of its kind. The two-part approach begins, in part one, with the basic interview. The interview is the foundation upon which other skills are developed. Also, the interview is typically used at the beginning of a case or in the initial phases of research. Interrogation naturally flows from the interview chapters in part one to complete the skill sets needed to extract and distill the needed information effectively. What makes this book unique is the attention given to the subject of eyewitness evidence. This area of forensics is an interesting mix of psychology, law, and specialized interview techniques. To properly address this important topic, it was necessary to devote the entire second part to it. Given its unique subject matter, it does not easily flow with the other subjects, i.e., interviews and interrogation. The net result, however, is a complete, robust, and thorough resource. Finally, an investigator is better able to probe for relevant information and evidence when their legal and technical skills are properly developed and honed. We include an appendix devoted to each topic. In Appendix A, we address technical avenues, both from a topical standpoint and a learning method approach. In Appendix B, we present the same information but for learning legal principles and regulatory frameworks. Armed with these additional skills, you will be able to reflexively inquire about relevant avenues when you are interviewing anyone.
