Since the 1980s, global jihad has seen four distinct iterations, or waves, each emerging from a particular crisis, and each with its own ideology and program for achieving a global end, be it creating a Jihadi International to liberate occupied Muslim lands, driving the Americans out of the Muslim world, recreating a new and radical caliphate throughout all of the lands once ruled by Muslims, or mounting a global but leaderless jihad to keep alive hope for a more powerful global jihad movement in the future.
