A magical realism romance that explores the role of destiny in lifeDoes déjà vu have a deeper meaning? A puzzling gift from a stranger in a hat shop. Whisperings and footsteps in a dim luxury hotel. Dreams that transport to elegant parties where champagne flows like water. Kat is both frightened and intrigued by the events that have plagued her since she arrived in London, in a final effort to save herself from anorexia and recover from her latest suicide attempt. Most disturbing is an encounter with a mysterious woman who introduces Kat to Will. And this lovely messenger has information she desperately wants to share with Kat: an incident from more than a century ago that could transform Kat's future. But will Kat listen? A story of the role of destiny in life... and of righting the wrongs of the past. Also: Read Adria's debut literary fiction novel, Paris, Rue des Martyrs, which paints an intriguing picture of the intertwining relationships of four strangers in Paris. If you like magical realism romance with mystical romance elements, this love story, set in London and New York, is for you. Fans of Sarah Addison Allen will enjoy this enchanting tale of family, relationships & self-discovery. If you love strong female protagonists, diverse characters & quests involving secrets from the past, "Close to Destiny" is the perfect novel to add to your to-read list! Interview with the AuthorQ. What was your inspiration to write Close to Destiny? A. I used to stay at a beautiful, mysterious London hotel for business trips. The setting-dim, quiet & elegant-made me think of romance, clandestine parties, family secrets, midnight encounters, dreams. I'm always inspired by city life, unexpected encounters and family relationships. I wove these elements and others into this urban psychic romance. Q. It seems as if it might fall into several genres? A. It's contemporary literary fiction, yet includes magical realism romance and paranormal elements. Readers say it reminds them of the time travel romance The Time Traveler's Wife and novels by Sarah Addison Allen. I included mystical romance elements in this psychic love story to transport the reader to another place... and to question our notions of reality. And in general, I aim to write fiction that is fast-paced, with surprising plot twists. Q. You enjoy diversity in books. What makes Close to Destiny diverse? A. Even though this is magical realism romance, I like my characters to be "real" to reflect our society. A gay couple plays an important role, and the main character battles with mental illness, specifically depression and anorexia, bringing new life to traditional mental illness fiction. My novel Paris, Rue des Martyrs features Colombian, Italian, French, American characters, and one of the characters is deaf. They are diverse not to reach some sort of quota, but simply because this is life. Life is diversity. Q. What message do you hope readers take with them after reading? A. The book deals with facing (or refusal to face) mistakes of the past, healing old wounds and starting over. Another important theme is (big surprise) destiny. How much control do we have over our own destiny? Q. What types of books do you read? A. I enjoy a wide variety of fiction, but my favorites are literary fiction & women's fiction with strong female protagonists.
