Putting Man On Trial: Proofs For The Existence Of God

If God is good, why does He allow evil and suffering? This world seems torn apart and at odds with what many of us have been told about God: that is, He is powerful and good. How can we reconcile a good God and the present existence of evil that we see around us? When people ask this question, they are essentially calling into question the character of God. The question is less about the evil that occurs and more about the God who allows it. In many ways, at that moment, they are not asking why God has allowed evil and suffering, but rather what type of God would allow it to continue. What they are implying is, "How could You? How dare You? Why would You allow this to happen?" Those individuals are standing in judgement of God, and their question is more of an accusation. If we are going to put God on trial, then we must consider His defense. I am not saying that God needs a defense or that He has felt the need to defend Himself to us; rather, there is an explanation available if we really want to know why the world is the way that it is.
