Eighteen-year-old Maggie had been dreaming of leaving Hoop County, SC for Philadelphia for a while. She imagined a new life away from the rural south. With the promise of sending money back home to help save the family farm, her parents finally gave their blessing. Before she left to go north, Maggie met Clarence at a dance. After courting and falling in love, he asked her to stay and marry him. Faced with the difficult decision of whether to follow her heart or follow her dreams, Maggie decided to follow her dreams. Under their special Willow tree, Maggie made a promise to Clarence that when she came back in a year, she would be ready to be his wife and that nothing would come between them. In Philadelphia, Maggie's roommate, Yvonne, introduced her to the city's nightlife, clubs, and parties and helped her shed her backwoods, country ways. When Maggie suddenly stopped receiving letters from Clarence, she is devastated and accepts Benny's friendship, a saxophone player she met through Yvonne. It is when she returns home due to her mother's illness, she is forced to face her true feelings for Clarence.Little did Maggie know her roommate and best friend Yvonne hid Clarence's letters from her for months and her sister Bernita, was about to betray her so deeply that their relationship might never recover. This is a story about the black migration during the depression of the 1930s, of love found and lost, sisterhood, and forgiveness.
