Eighteen-year-old Maggie had been dreaming of leaving Hoop County, SC for Philadelphia for a while. She imagined a new life away from the rural south. With the promise of sending money back home to help save the family farm, her parents finally gave their blessing. Before she left to go north, Maggie met Clarence at a dance. It is when she returns home due to her mother's illness, she is forced to face her true feelings for Clarence.Little did Maggie know her roommate and best friend Yvonne hid Clarence's letters from her for months and her sister Bernita, was about to betray her so deeply that their relationship might never recover.
