Donald John Macleod settles in Australia. A family of Scottish descent encourages him to expound Scotland's history and help them understand their roots. Revisiting Scotland with them gives many opportunities for more history lessons as they explore Scotland's cultural background. He notes an exciting political awakening. Westminster is not perceived to act in Scotland's interest but it is not for him to become involved. A nephew, Matt Harris, has been brought up with clearer image of Scotland's future. He becomes totally obsessed with the campaign for independence. Matt and friends follow the political manoeuvres in great detail and get involved in endless debates and discussions. After the referendum defeat he decides to put politics behind him, but then for Scotland political fact becomes stranger than fiction. With unexpected election results and the prospect of Scotland being dragged out of the European Union interest is rekindled.
